AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY AND ITS IMPLICATION ON SECURITY AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Development of any country is dependent on many factors which fast-tracks or retards its growth. In Nigeria today, out of these factors security is central. But, unfortunately, Boko Haram insurgency introduces a security threat which challenges the development of the country. Such threats include bombings, abductions and wanton destruction of lives and property especially in the north eastern Nigeria. Economically, since the risk of doing business increases when there is insecurity in the land, investors who are to facilitate industrial growth and employment generation have been avoiding such an unfavourable business environment. This situation, poses a great threat to the country’s stability and sustainable national development. This paper seeks to examine the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on security and national development in Nigeria. The paper relied on secondary sources of data, including text books, journals, magazines, newspapers and internet materials. It proffers that government as a matter of priority, must do everything possible to put an end to the menace of insurgency as well as reduce poverty and youth unemployment. The paper concludes that, addressing issues of insecurity is crucial to successful development efforts.
