THE RELEVANCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL UTILISATION IN THE TEACHING OF SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
Abstract
Students’ poor Subjects performance in senior secondary schools is worrisome and induces youths to engage in several social vices. An attempt to curb the menace and improve students’ performance led this study to assess the instructional resources and effective teaching of Subjects in secondary schools in Kolokumo/Opokumo lga of bayelsa. Adopting the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study comprised selectedsenior secondary schools, questionnaires were distributed to teachers, and students. 100 students and 20 teachers eventually emerged as samples using Checkmarket Sample Size Calculator at 5% margin and 95% confidence level. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and analysed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the teachers of Subjects were not using activity-based teaching strategies. Most of the instructional materials necessary for the effective teaching of Subjects were inadequate and malfunctioning. Therefore, Subjects teachers are strongly encouraged to apply innovative and experiential learning strategies in teaching and learning. Furthermore, adequate infrastructure and modern equipment in the schools will create better learning opportunities for students.
