EVALUATION OF PARATHYROID HORMONE, CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS LEVELS AMONG WOMEN WITH OSTEOPOROSIS IN RIVERS STATE

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and microarchitecture deterioration of the bone, leading to increased fragility and a high risk of fracture. It is a silent disease until fractures occur, which causes important secondary health problems and even death. Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease in humans, representing a major public health problem. The aim of this study was determine of Parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosphorus among women with osteoporosis in compare with control group This is case control study conducted in Rivers state in period from February to December 2018, this study includes 90 Sudanese women 50 of them are diagnosed to have osteoporosis and 40 are healthy controls for comparison. Three ml of venous blood obtained from each participant and placed in heparin containers for estimation of calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone, the samples were centrifuged to obtain plasma, then plasma transferred to Eppendorf tube and kept at -30 until time of analysis. The calcium and phosphorus were analyzed by spectrophotometer using reagent kits supplied by BioSystem company and parathyroid hormone was analyzed by ELISA.
