ETHNOBOTANICAL SURVEY ON MEDICINAL PLANTS AND TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL PRACTICES IN BORNO STATE

PROPOSAL

Abstract:

This ethnobotanical survey aims to document and analyze the rich diversity of medicinal plants utilized in traditional healing practices across Borno State, Nigeria. The region, characterized by its unique ecological and cultural attributes, holds a wealth of indigenous knowledge related to medicinal flora and the traditional healing systems employed by local communities.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining field surveys, interviews, and participatory observations to collect data from traditional healers, herbalists, and community members. Through systematic sampling, plant specimens are collected, identified, and cataloged to create a comprehensive herbarium. Concurrently, in-depth interviews are conducted to gather information on the medicinal uses, preparation methods, and therapeutic applications of the identified plant species.

The ethnobotanical survey aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) document the diversity of medicinal plants used in Borno State, (2) analyze the traditional knowledge associated with plant-based medicine, (3) assess the cultural significance of these practices within local communities, and (4) explore potential avenues for sustainable conservation and utilization of medicinal flora.

The findings of this research contribute to the understanding of the intricate relationship between local communities and their natural environment, emphasizing the importance of traditional knowledge in healthcare systems. Furthermore, the study provides valuable insights for conservation efforts, sustainable harvesting practices, and potential collaboration between traditional healers and modern healthcare practitioners.

Introduction

Medicinal plants have been integral to traditional healthcare systems for centuries, providing a foundation for the well-being of many communities. Borno State, Nigeria, known for its unique ecological and cultural diversity, harbors a rich repository of indigenous knowledge on medicinal plants. This proposal outlines a comprehensive ethnobotanical survey aimed at documenting and understanding the traditional uses of medicinal plants in Borno State.

Conclusion

The ethnobotanical survey in Borno State holds great promise for uncovering valuable insights into traditional medicinal practices. The findings are anticipated to contribute not only to the academic field but also to the sustainable development and conservation efforts in the region.
