EFFECT OF DEMONSTRATION METHOD ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF HISTORY STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN JOS NORTH LGA, PLATEAU STATE

Abstract:

This study investigates the impact of the demonstration method on the academic achievement of history students in secondary schools within Jos North Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of the demonstration method in enhancing students’ understanding and retention of historical concepts compared to traditional teaching approaches. A mixed-methods research design will be employed, incorporating both quantitative measures such as pre- and post-tests, as well as qualitative methods like classroom observations and student interviews.

The sample population will consist of secondary school history students in Jos North LGA, selected through a stratified random sampling technique. The study will be conducted over a specified timeframe, with data collection instruments tailored to measure academic performance, student engagement, and comprehension of historical content. Statistical analyses will be employed to compare the academic achievements of students exposed to the demonstration method with those taught using conventional methods.

The findings of this research aim to contribute valuable insights to the field of history education, providing evidence-based recommendations for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers. Understanding the impact of different teaching methods on the academic performance of history students can lead to the enhancement of teaching strategies, fostering a more effective and engaging learning environment in secondary schools in Jos North LGA and beyond.

CHAPTER ONE:

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

Education is the cornerstone of societal progress, and the methods employed in teaching have a profound impact on students’ academic achievements. The field of history education, in particular, demands thoughtful pedagogical approaches to ensure that students not only grasp historical facts but also develop critical thinking skills. Among the various instructional methods, the demonstration method has emerged as a potential catalyst for enhancing the learning experience. This research investigates the “Effect of Demonstration Method on the Academic Achievement of History Students in Secondary Schools in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State.”

Secondary education forms the bedrock of intellectual development, and history, as a subject, serves as a gateway to understanding the socio-cultural, economic, and political evolution of societies. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, the academic performance of history students in secondary schools has prompted a closer examination of teaching methods. The traditional lecture-based approach, while prevalent, may not always provide the interactive and experiential learning necessary for students to grasp historical nuances effectively.

The demonstration method, characterized by its use of visual aids, practical examples, and real-life applications, presents an alternative pedagogical strategy that has shown promise in diverse educational contexts. Through hands-on experiences and interactive demonstrations, this method aims to foster a deeper understanding of historical concepts and events among students. However, the extent to which the demonstration method influences the academic achievement of history students in Jos North LGA remains an area worthy of exploration.

Education is a fundamental tool for individual and societal development, providing a platform for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies. Within the educational landscape, teaching methods play a crucial role in shaping the learning experience and influencing academic outcomes.
