KLEBSIELLA SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH URINARY TRACT INFECTION AMONG STUDENTS
ABSTRACT:
This work discusses klebsiella species associated with urinary tract infection among students. The genus Klebsiella belongs to the tribe Klebsiellae, a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The organisms are named after Edwin Klebs, a 19th century German microbiologist. Klebsiellae are nonmotile, rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria with a prominent polysaccharide capsule. This capsule encases the entire cell surface, accounts for the large appearance of the organism on gram stain, and provides resistance against many host defense mechanisms. A test was performed on a selected hundred and twenty infected students.
It was observed therefore that Klebsiella organisms are resistant to multiple antibiotics. This is thought to be a plasmid-mediated property. Length of hospital stay and performance of invasive procedures are risk factors for acquisition of these strains.
Treatment depends on the organ system involved. In general, initial therapy of patients with possible bacteremia is empirical. The choice of a specific antimicrobial agent depends on local susceptibility patterns. Once bacteremia is confirmed, treatment may be modified.
