ISOLATION OF PATHOGENIC BACTERIA FROM THE FEACE AND SALIVA OF HEMIDACTYLUS TURCICUS (WALL GECKO) IN BEKWARRA LGA

Abstract:

The study investigates the presence and isolation of pathogenic bacteria from the feces and saliva of Hemidactylus turcicus, commonly known as the wall gecko, in Bekwarra Local Government Area (LGA). Wall geckos are ubiquitous reptiles found in both urban and rural environments, often cohabiting with humans. Understanding the microbial profile of these geckos is essential for assessing potential public health risks associated with their presence in domestic spaces.

A cross-sectional research design was employed, involving the collection of fecal and saliva samples from Hemidactylus turcicus specimens in various locations within Bekwarra LGA. Microbiological techniques, including culture, biochemical assays, and molecular analysis, were utilized to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria present in the samples.

Preliminary findings indicate the presence of a diverse microbial community in both feces and saliva, including bacterial species known for their pathogenic potential. The identified bacteria will be further characterized to determine their antibiotic resistance profiles and virulence factors.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study
