EFFECT OF STRESS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEES IN FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WORK ABUJA

Abstract

Stress is an inevitable aspect of modern work environments, especially in government institutions where employees face increasing demands and responsibilities. This study examines the effect of stress on the performance of employees in the Federal Ministry of Work, Abuja. The research aims to identify the sources of stress, assess its impact on employee productivity, and explore strategies for managing stress to enhance performance.

Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through surveys and interviews with employees at the Ministry. The results reveal that workload, tight deadlines, and inadequate resources are significant stressors that negatively affect job performance, leading to reduced efficiency, low morale, and increased absenteeism. The study also identifies that employees with effective stress management strategies, such as time management and workplace support systems, demonstrate better performance and job satisfaction.

The findings suggest that addressing stress in the workplace through improved working conditions, employee wellness programs, and stress management training can enhance overall performance and productivity. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on occupational stress and offers valuable insights for policymakers and human resource managers in public sector organizations, particularly in optimizing employee performance under stressful conditions.
