DEVELOPMENT OF A RAPID DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR EARLY DETECTION OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE

Abstract:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that significantly impacts the quality of life and survival rates, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources. Early detection of SCD is critical for timely intervention and effective management of the disease. This project focuses on the development of a rapid diagnostic test aimed at the early detection of sickle cell disease, providing a more accessible and efficient alternative to current diagnostic methods. The test will utilize a novel combination of molecular biology techniques to identify the presence of hemoglobin S, the abnormal form of hemoglobin responsible for SCD, in blood samples. By optimizing the sensitivity and specificity of the test, the proposed diagnostic tool will reduce the need for complex and expensive equipment, making it suitable for widespread use in low-resource settings. The rapid test will enable early diagnosis in newborns and at-risk populations, facilitating prompt treatment, reducing complications, and improving patient outcomes. This project represents a significant step towards addressing the public health challenge posed by sickle cell disease through innovative diagnostic technology.
