A REVIEW OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY OF HEPATITIS VIRUS INFECTION AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING SHOGUNLE PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE OF LAGO S STATE
Abstract:
Hepatitis virus infection during pregnancy poses significant risks to both maternal health and fetal well-being. This epidemiological study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors of hepatitis virus infection among pregnant women attending the Shogunle Primary Health Care Centre in Lagos State, Nigeria.
A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving the collection of demographic data and blood samples from pregnant women attending antenatal care at the health center. Serum samples were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C antibodies (anti-HCV).
The findings reveal a prevalence rate of hepatitis virus infection among pregnant women in the study population. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was found to be more prevalent, followed by hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Factors such as age, education level, and previous history of blood transfusion were identified as potential risk factors for hepatitis virus infection among pregnant women.
This study underscores the importance of routine screening and vaccination programs for hepatitis virus infection during antenatal care to prevent vertical transmission to newborns. Implementing effective strategies for the prevention and management of hepatitis virus infection among pregnant women is crucial for reducing the burden of liver disease in both mothers and infants.
The results of this study contribute to the body of knowledge on the epidemiology of hepatitis virus infection in pregnant women in Nigeria, providing valuable insights for public health interventions and policy development aimed at reducing the prevalence and impact of these infections.
