EVALUATING EFFECTIVENESS  OF APPRAISAL TECHNIQUES IN NIGERIA ORGANIZATION(CASE STUDY OF NIGERIA BOTTLING COMPANY,KANO)

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In every organization, performance appraisal is a critical process that enables management to evaluate the contributions of employees to the achievement of organizational goals. In the context of Nigerian organizations, including manufacturing companies like the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), performance appraisal serves as a tool for measuring employee efficiency, promoting motivation, identifying skill gaps, and providing feedback for continuous development. Despite the significance of performance appraisal, the effectiveness of appraisal techniques in Nigerian organizations is often questioned due to inconsistencies in their application and alignment with organizational objectives.

The Nigerian Bottling Company, a major player in the Nigerian beverage industry, operates within a competitive business environment that requires efficient human resource management strategies. Employee performance directly impacts productivity and profitability in this sector, making the appraisal system an essential tool for fostering organizational success. However, the appraisal techniques utilized may not always yield the desired outcomes, such as improved employee performance, motivation, and overall job satisfaction. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques in order to identify areas for improvement.

This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of performance appraisal techniques in the Nigerian Bottling Company, Kano, to determine whether they align with the company’s goals and objectives, and to offer recommendations for enhancing the appraisal system.

However, in many Nigerian organizations, including the Nigerian Bottling Company, there are concerns regarding the effectiveness of these appraisal techniques. These issues can lead to employee dissatisfaction, decreased morale, and ultimately, reduced productivity.

The Nigerian Bottling Company, like other manufacturing firms, relies heavily on the performance of its workforce to remain competitive. In the absence of a robust and effective appraisal system, employees may lack the motivation to improve, and management may be unable to make informed decisions regarding promotions, training, and development.
