THROMBOCYTOSIS: CAUSES,CONSEQUENCES AND CLINICAL MANAGEMENT

Abstract:

Thrombocytosis, characterized by an abnormally high platelet count in the blood, can arise due to a variety of underlying conditions and presents a significant clinical concern. This condition is classified into primary (essential thrombocythemia) and secondary (reactive thrombocytosis), with each type having distinct etiological factors. Primary thrombocytosis is often linked to myeloproliferative disorders, whereas secondary thrombocytosis commonly occurs in response to inflammation, infection, trauma, or malignancy. Elevated platelet counts can increase the risk of thrombotic complications, such as stroke or myocardial infarction, while paradoxically leading to bleeding disorders in some cases. Clinical management of thrombocytosis involves addressing the underlying cause, monitoring platelet levels, and administering treatments like antiplatelet therapy or cytoreductive agents, particularly in high-risk patients. This review explores the causes, potential consequences, and therapeutic strategies in the clinical management of thrombocytosis, providing insights into current practices and emerging treatments aimed at reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with the condition.
