EFFECTS OF RICE HUSK ASH AND GRINDED RICE HUSKS ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE

Abstract:

The utilization of agricultural by-products in the construction industry has gained increasing attention due to environmental concerns and the quest for sustainable materials. This study investigates the impact of incorporating rice husk ash (RHA) and ground rice husks (GRH) as partial replacements for cement and fine aggregates, respectively, on the compressive strength of concrete.

In the experimental phase, different concrete mixtures were prepared with varying proportions of RHA and GRH. The compressive strength of each mixture was assessed at different curing periods to evaluate the influence of these rice-derived additives on the overall performance of the concrete. Additionally, the study examines the microstructural changes within the concrete matrix through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses.

The findings of this research aim to provide insights into the feasibility of incorporating rice husk-derived materials in concrete production. The compressive strength results will be analyzed to identify optimal proportions of RHA and GRH for enhancing the mechanical properties of concrete while contributing to sustainable and eco-friendly construction practices. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts in utilizing agricultural waste in construction materials, offering potential solutions for both waste management and improved concrete performance.

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Concrete is a fundamental construction material widely used for various infrastructure projects. The demand for sustainable and eco-friendly construction practices has led to increased research into alternative materials that can enhance the properties of concrete. Rice husk ash (RHA) and ground rice husks (GRH) are by-products of rice milling and processing, and they have shown potential as supplementary materials in concrete production. This study aims to investigate the effects of incorporating Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks on the compressive strength of concrete, with a focus on sustainable and cost-effective construction practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The conventional production of concrete involves the use of Portland cement, which is associated with high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the disposal of agricultural waste, such as rice husks, poses environmental challenges. Addressing these issues requires exploring alternative materials like Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks to reduce the environmental impact of concrete production and enhance its mechanical properties. Understanding the effects of these materials on the compressive strength of concrete is crucial for their effective utilization in construction.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this research are:

To investigate the impact of Rice Husk Ash on the compressive strength of concrete.

To examine the influence of ground Rice Husks on the compressive strength of concrete.

To assess the combined effects of Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks on the compressive strength of concrete.

To provide insights into the potential applications and limitations of using these rice-based materials in concrete production.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide the study, the following research questions are formulated:

How does the inclusion of Rice Husk Ash affect the compressive strength of concrete?

What is the influence of ground Rice Husks on the compressive strength of concrete?

How do the combined effects of Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks impact the compressive strength of concrete?

What are the potential applications and limitations of using Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks in concrete production?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research holds significance in several aspects:

Sustainable Construction: Investigating the use of Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks contributes to sustainable construction practices by repurposing agricultural waste.

Cost-Effective Alternatives: Understanding the impact on compressive strength helps evaluate the economic feasibility of incorporating these materials into concrete mixes.

Environmental Impact: The study addresses environmental concerns by exploring alternatives to traditional cement in concrete production, thereby reducing carbon footprints.

1.6 Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the effects of Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks on the compressive strength of concrete. The research is limited to laboratory experiments, and the findings may be influenced by factors such as material characteristics, mix proportions, and curing conditions. The geographical applicability of the results may vary based on regional variations in raw materials.

1.7 Organization of the Thesis

The thesis is organized into several chapters to provide a systematic presentation of the research. Chapter Two will review existing literature on the use of alternative materials in concrete production, with a specific focus on Rice Husk Ash and ground Rice Husks. Chapter Three will detail the methodology employed in this research. Subsequent chapters will present the findings, discuss implications, and conclude the study.
