Abstract

The successful implementation of any curriculum reform largely depends on the preparedness of personnel and the adequacy of infrastructure within the school system. This study assessed the level of personnel and infrastructure readiness for the implementation of the new Basic School Science Curriculum in selected secondary schools in Olorunda Local Government Area, Osogbo, Osun State. A descriptive survey design was employed, involving both teaching staff and school administrators. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and observational checklists, and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores.

Findings revealed that while a majority of science teachers possessed the minimum required academic qualifications, there existed significant gaps in specialized training specific to the new curriculum. Furthermore, many schools lacked essential facilities such as equipped laboratories, modern instructional materials, and adequate classroom space, which are vital for effective science instruction. The study also found limited access to professional development opportunities, which further hindered curriculum delivery.

The research concludes that both human and infrastructural deficiencies pose substantial challenges to the effective implementation of the new Basic School Science Curriculum in the area. It recommends targeted investment in teacher training, recruitment of qualified personnel, and upgrading of science teaching facilities to enhance curriculum delivery and improve science education outcomes.
