APPLYING GEOMATICS TO ENHANCE WASTE MANAGEMENT, SANITATION, AND THE PREVENTION OF HEALTH RISKS IN UVWIE LGA

Abstract

Effective waste management and sanitation are essential components of public health, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas such as Uvwie Local Government Area (LGA) in Delta State, Nigeria. This study explores the role of geomatics (geospatial technologies and methods) in addressing the challenges of waste management, environmental sanitation, and associated health risks within the LGA. Using an integrated approach that combines remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and field surveys, spatial data were collected and analyzed to map waste disposal sites, identify sanitation hotspots, and assess the correlation between waste accumulation and reported health issues.

The findings reveal a significant spatial clustering of illegal dumpsites in densely populated and unplanned neighborhoods, contributing to increased risks of cholera, malaria, and respiratory infections. Furthermore, poor accessibility to formal waste collection services was found to correlate with higher incidences of indiscriminate dumping and open defecation. The study demonstrates that geomatics tools offer real-time, evidence-based decision support for optimizing waste collection routes, monitoring sanitation infrastructure, and prioritizing public health interventions.

It is concluded that the integration of geomatics into waste management policy and planning can significantly enhance the effectiveness of environmental sanitation efforts and reduce health hazards in Uvwie LGA. The study recommends institutional investment in geospatial infrastructure and capacity building among local waste management authorities.
