IMPACT OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ON FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN AGRICULTURAL VALUE CHAIN

Abstract

The integration of digital technologies into financial systems has transformed access to credit, savings, insurance, and payment services across various sectors. In agriculture, where smallholder farmers often face barriers such as limited access to financial services, high transaction costs, and market inefficiencies, digital solutions present opportunities for enhanced financial inclusion. This study investigates the impact of digital technologies on financial inclusion within the agricultural value chain. It explores how tools such as mobile banking, digital wallets, blockchain, and agricultural fintech platforms contribute to improving farmers’ access to credit, reducing transaction risks, strengthening linkages with input suppliers and buyers, and promoting transparency in agricultural markets. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzes primary data from farmers, financial service providers, and agribusiness stakeholders, complemented by secondary data from policy documents and industry reports. The findings reveal that digital technologies significantly expand financial inclusion by enabling secure transactions, reducing dependence on informal credit systems, and fostering greater participation of smallholder farmers in the agricultural economy. However, challenges such as digital illiteracy, infrastructural deficits, and regulatory gaps continue to limit their full potential. The study concludes that effective policy frameworks, capacity-building initiatives, and investment in rural digital infrastructure are crucial to maximizing the benefits of digital finance in agriculture. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable rural development and provides recommendations for leveraging digital innovations to strengthen agricultural value chains and promote inclusive growth.
