CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Project management in construction has increasingly relied on technology to improve efficiency, reduce cost overruns, and enhance communication among stakeholders (Kerzner, 2017). Construction projects are inherently complex, involving multiple activities, resources, and stakeholders, which often lead to delays, inefficiencies, and budgetary challenges (Choudhry et al., 2012). Project Management Software (PMS) has emerged as a critical tool for planning, scheduling, monitoring, and controlling construction activities (Hegazy, 2002).
In the context of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has witnessed a surge in infrastructural projects due to urban expansion and government initiatives. Despite these developments, inefficiencies and project delays remain persistent challenges. Several studies have highlighted that inadequate adoption of project management tools contributes significantly to these inefficiencies (PMI, 2021). Project Management Software such as Primavera, MS Project, and Procore provide functionalities that facilitate task scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and progress tracking (Elbeltagi et al., 2016). Evaluating the effectiveness of these tools in improving construction efficiency is therefore vital for the growth of the construction industry in the FCT.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Construction projects in FCT Abuja are often characterized by delays, cost overruns, and mismanagement of resources (Olanipekun et al., 2016). These challenges are frequently attributed to inadequate project planning, poor monitoring, and inefficient communication among project stakeholders (Enshassi et al., 2009). While Project Management Software has been promoted as a solution to these issues, its implementation and effectiveness in the FCT context remain underexplored. There is a gap in empirical research evaluating how PMS adoption influences construction efficiency, particularly regarding time, cost, and quality performance. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the impact of Project Management Software on construction project efficiency in Abuja.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Project Management Software in improving construction efficiency in FCT Abuja. The specific objectives are to:
Assess the extent of Project Management Software adoption in construction projects in FCT Abuja.
Examine the impact of PMS on project time management.
Evaluate the effect of PMS on cost control and budgeting in construction projects.
Analyze the role of PMS in enhancing communication and coordination among project stakeholders.
Identify the challenges associated with PMS adoption in construction projects in FCT Abuja.
1.4 Research Questions
To what extent is Project Management Software adopted in construction projects in FCT Abuja?
How does Project Management Software impact project time management?
What effect does PMS have on cost control and budgeting?
How does PMS enhance communication and coordination among project stakeholders?
What challenges are faced in adopting Project Management Software in construction projects?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
H₀1: Project Management Software has no significant effect on time efficiency in construction projects.
H₁1: Project Management Software has a significant effect on time efficiency in construction projects.
H₀2: Project Management Software does not significantly improve cost management in construction projects.
H₁2: Project Management Software significantly improves cost management in construction projects.
H₀3: Project Management Software does not significantly enhance communication and coordination among project stakeholders.
H₁3: Project Management Software significantly enhances communication and coordination among project stakeholders.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are expected to benefit multiple stakeholders. Construction companies and project managers can leverage the insights to optimize PMS adoption for enhanced project performance (Akinradewo & Olanipekun, 2020). Policymakers and regulators in the FCT can use the results to develop strategies for promoting technological adoption in the construction sector. Additionally, the study contributes to academic knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the impact of PMS on construction efficiency in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on construction projects within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, covering both residential and commercial developments. The research evaluates selected Project Management Software tools, including MS Project, Primavera, and Procore, with respect to their impact on time, cost, and communication efficiency. The study is limited to construction firms actively using PMS in their projects.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Project Management Software (PMS): Computer-based tools used to plan, execute, monitor, and control project activities (Kerzner, 2017).
Construction Efficiency: The ability to complete construction projects on time, within budget, and according to specifications (Choudhry et al., 2012).
Time Management: Planning and controlling the schedule of project activities to meet deadlines (Hegazy, 2002).
Cost Control: Techniques used to manage and reduce construction costs while maintaining quality standards (Olanipekun et al., 2016).
Stakeholders: Individuals or groups involved in or affected by a construction project, including clients, contractors, and consultants (PMI, 2021).
