Assessment of Teacher-Related Factors Affecting Effective Teaching of Health Education in Public Secondary Schools in Enugu South LGA, Enugu State
ABSTRACT
This study examines teacher-related factors influencing the effective teaching of Health Education in public secondary schools in Enugu South Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, Nigeria. Health Education plays a critical role in equipping students with essential knowledge and skills for healthy living, yet its effectiveness largely depends on the competence, motivation, and instructional strategies of teachers.
Using a descriptive survey research design, the study collected data from 150 Health Education teachers across 20 public secondary schools through structured questionnaires and classroom observation checklists. The research focused on key teacher-related variables, including qualifications, teaching experience, instructional methods, availability of teaching materials, teacher motivation, and professional development opportunities.
Findings revealed that:
62% of teachers lacked specialized training in Health Education, affecting content delivery.
Inadequate teaching materials (78%) and outdated instructional methods (65%) hindered student engagement.
Low motivation due to delayed salaries (55%) and limited training opportunities (70%) impacted teaching effectiveness.
Schools with regular teacher workshops (40%) demonstrated improved student performance in Health Education.
The study concludes that teacher competence, resource availability, and institutional support are crucial for effective Health Education instruction. Recommendations include:
Mandatory specialized training for Health Education teachers.
Provision of modern teaching aids and curriculum-aligned materials.
Enhanced teacher incentives and timely professional development programs.
This research contributes to policy discussions on strengthening Health Education in Nigerian schools by addressing teacher-centered barriers.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Health Education is a critical component of the secondary school curriculum, designed to equip students with knowledge and skills for healthy living, disease prevention, and overall well-being (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). In Nigeria, Health Education is integrated into the Basic Education curriculum to address public health challenges such as poor hygiene, teenage pregnancy, and substance abuse (Federal Ministry of Education [FME], 2018). Despite its importance, the effectiveness of Health Education delivery in public secondary schools remains suboptimal, particularly in Enugu South Local Government Area (LGA), where student performance and practical application of health knowledge are reportedly low (Enugu State Ministry of Education [ESMOE], 2022).
Teachers play a pivotal role in the successful implementation of Health Education programs. However, studies indicate that several teacher-related factors, including qualifications, teaching experience, instructional methods, and motivation, significantly influence the quality of Health Education delivery (Adeniyi, 2019; Okafor & Eze, 2021). For instance, a survey by Ugwuanyi (2023) revealed that 65% of Health Education teachers in Enugu State lack subject-specific training, leading to ineffective pedagogy. Additionally, inadequate teaching materials and poor institutional support further exacerbate these challenges (Nworgu & Onyeke, 2020).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of Health Education, there is growing concern over its ineffective teaching in public secondary schools in Enugu South LGA. Preliminary investigations suggest that poor teacher preparedness, outdated instructional methods, and lack of motivation hinder students’ acquisition of essential health knowledge (ESMOE, 2022). For example, a recent study found that only 40% of students in the LGA could demonstrate proper handwashing techniques—a fundamental Health Education topic (Njoku, 2023).
While existing research has explored general challenges in Health Education implementation, few studies have specifically examined how teacher-related factors influence teaching effectiveness in Enugu South LGA. This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the extent to which teacher qualifications, instructional strategies, and institutional support affect the delivery of Health Education in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The study aims to:
Examine the impact of teacher qualifications on the effective teaching of Health Education.
Assess the influence of instructional methods on student comprehension of Health Education.
Evaluate the role of teacher motivation and professional development in Health Education delivery.
Investigate the availability of teaching materials and their effect on instructional quality.
