CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The construction industry is a complex and multidisciplinary sector that relies on the coordinated efforts of various professionals such as architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, builders, project managers, and contractors. Each professional group contributes specialized knowledge and skills toward the successful delivery of building projects. Effective interaction and collaboration among these professionals are critical to achieving project objectives in terms of cost, time, quality, and safety (Ogunsemi & Jagboro, 2006; Emuze & Smallwood, 2013).

In modern construction practice, projects have become increasingly complex due to advancements in technology, sustainability requirements, and client expectations. As a result, no single professional can independently handle all aspects of a project. Collaboration is therefore essential for integrating design, technical, financial, and managerial inputs into a coherent whole (Latham, 1994). Poor coordination and communication among professionals often lead to design errors, project delays, cost overruns, disputes, and poor-quality outcomes (Love et al., 2011).

In Nigeria, the construction sector plays a vital role in economic development by providing infrastructure, employment, and housing. However, studies have shown that ineffective professional interaction remains a major challenge affecting project performance (Olatunji et al., 2017). Traditional procurement systems, hierarchical structures, and professional rivalries often hinder teamwork and information sharing among construction stakeholders (Aje et al., 2016).

Therefore, examining how different construction professionals interact and collaborate on building projects is essential for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of current practices and for identifying strategies to improve teamwork and project delivery.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of collaboration in construction, many building projects continue to experience problems such as delays, cost escalation, rework, and disputes. These problems are often traced to poor communication, lack of trust, and weak coordination among construction professionals (Love et al., 2011; Aje et al., 2016).

In the Nigerian construction industry, professional fragmentation and role conflicts are common. Architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, and builders often operate in silos, with limited integration of efforts throughout the project lifecycle (Olatunji et al., 2017). This lack of synergy reduces efficiency and increases the likelihood of errors and misunderstandings.

There is therefore a need to critically examine how these professionals interact, communicate, and collaborate on building projects in order to identify gaps and propose ways to improve multidisciplinary teamwork in construction practice.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. It will help construction professionals understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving project success. It will also assist clients and project managers in adopting better coordination strategies that promote effective interaction among professionals.

Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on construction management and professional practice by providing empirical insights into multidisciplinary collaboration. Practically, the findings can guide policy makers, professional bodies, and construction firms in developing frameworks and training programs to enhance collaborative practices (Emuze & Smallwood, 2013; Olatunji et al., 2017).

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the interaction and collaboration of major construction professionals involved in building projects, including architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, builders, and project managers. It examines their roles and relationships from project conception to completion.

The study is limited to building construction projects and does not cover civil engineering works such as roads and bridges. It is also delimited to professional collaboration within the Nigerian construction context.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Construction Professionals: Trained and certified individuals involved in planning, designing, managing, and executing building projects.

Collaboration: The process of working jointly with others to achieve shared project goals.

Interaction: The exchange of information, ideas, and responsibilities among professionals.

Building Project: A planned process of constructing a structure for residential, commercial, or institutional use.

Project Delivery: The method and process through which a construction project is executed and completed.
