Influence of Parental Guidance and Support on Students’ Career Choices in Kaduna State Secondary Schools
Abstract
This study examines the influence of parental factors on the choice of career among students in senior secondary schools in Kaduna State. Career choice is a critical decision in the life of adolescents, as it shapes their future educational and occupational paths. Parents play a significant role in this process through their values, expectations, socio-economic status, educational background, and level of involvement in their children’s academic and career development.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to senior secondary school students across selected schools in Kaduna State. The instrument measured parental influence in terms of guidance, encouragement, pressure, role modeling, and support. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data.
Findings indicate that parental factors significantly influence students’ career choices. Students whose parents provide guidance and encouragement tend to make more informed and confident career decisions. Conversely, excessive parental pressure was found to negatively affect students’ satisfaction with their chosen career paths. Parental education level and socio-economic status were also identified as important determinants of career choice.
The study concludes that parents play a central role in shaping students’ career aspirations and decisions in Kaduna State. It recommends that parents, schools, and career counselors work collaboratively to support students in making career choices that align with their interests, abilities, and future opportunities.
