Abstract

Effective management of school finance plays a critical role in enhancing learning outcomes, particularly in resource-constrained settings such as public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. This study investigates the relationship between financial management practices and student academic performance in Lagos State secondary schools. It explores how budget allocation, fund utilization, financial accountability, and resource distribution influence teaching quality, infrastructure, student support services, and ultimately, learning outcomes. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from school financial records and academic performance reports with qualitative insights from interviews with school administrators, teachers, and policy-makers. Findings reveal that schools with transparent and strategic financial practices experience significantly better academic outcomes. The study underscores the need for capacity-building among school managers, enhanced oversight mechanisms, and participatory budgeting processes. By aligning financial resources with educational priorities, Lagos State can foster a more equitable and effective secondary education system. Recommendations are provided to guide policy reforms aimed at optimizing school finance management for improved student achievement.
