CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Nigeria, the “giant” of Africa is currently at crossroads. From the religious uprisings in the North to the ethnic conflicts in the South, the serious crime situation, and the Executive-Legislative brawl, Nigeria is always boiling. However, Nigeria may be stewing in a potentially devastating problem that is yet to attract the sustained attention of its elite and international well-wishers: The unfolding epidemic of HIV/AIDS.

According to the United Nations Agency on AIDS (UNAIDS), nearly 3 million Nigerians live with HIV or are dying of AIDS, a prevalence rate of 5 percent. In some urban centers, the prevalence is more than 15% among the adult population, and at least 20% among pregnant women. HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects future leaders of Nigeria: Nigerians, ages 20 through 39 account for more than 70% of all infections. Nearly 85% of all HIV transmission occurs through heterosexual contact. Nigeria has one of the highest rates of HIV by unsafe blood transfusions (14%) in the world. Conservatively, UNAIDS estimates that 1.7 million Nigerians have died of AIDS, and more than 1.3 million children have been orphaned.

The Political, Social, Economic, Health Consequences of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria

At the present trend of infection, by the year 2020, 75 million Nigerians may live with the HIV virus. These infected Nigerians will live under a certain death sentence unless rapid strides are made in vaccine development and administration. For the millions of Nigerians living with HIV, and slowly dying from AIDS, their preoccupation is unlikely to revolve around the major national issues of today: Sharia; North versus South power shift; Executive versus Legislative fight for supremacy; Ethnic struggles for control of natural and man-made resources; The Military versus civilian control of government. Please, these national issues are important for the corporate survival of Nigeria. However, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has the potential to disarm both the Sharia warriors and antagonists, waste the political elites, rob these elites of their “supporters,” decimate the Military, and render mute the ethnic-based struggle for economic empowerment.
