MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS INFLUENCING CAREER CHOICE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The choice of career is one of the most difficult decisions in a person’s life. Career choice is one of the most important decisions every student in the secondary school irrespective of his class, must make in accordance with his academic pursuits. It involves a person’s procession, which include a number of occupation, profession, vocation or jobs one engage in during his life time.

Kinance (2004) explained career as the sum total of an individual’s vocation or job, or work a person does in life. Therefore, a career is a dynamic vocation or job which an individual has interest in and find himself qualify to do in his life time. Perhaps, it is splendid to note that the choice of career is an area of interest were one has a focus on.

Azinla and Iwundu (1995) differentiate career from occupation as they put it, “career is used in the same sense to mean occupation”, but the problem seems to lie on the use of word profession, when an individual receives adequate training in guidance and counseling, for example; he may be described as a guidance counselor by profession. That is to say that in answer to the question, what is his profession? We can really say guidance and counseling (P.12).

Anagbogu (1998) in his research work, have found out that before a students take many factors into consideration.
